Calcium build-up, also known as scale, will "bridge" the plates together not allowing the salt cell to produce sanitizer. Calcium forms due to the heat and high pH of the chlorine produced by electrolysis. It is important to have your salt cell inspected and cleaned every 2-6 months to ensure you get the most life possible out of your system.
